Sunday July 24 2011: this is the day to fix on every skyrunner’s calendar, the day in which the Dolomites Skyrace takes place, the prestigiuos skyrace once again included in the international calendar of the World Series.
The Dolomites Skyrace takes place in the wonderful scenery of the Val di Fassa Dolomites , recently recognized as UNESCO Natural World Heritage, and it will be one of the trials of the Skyrunning World Series 2011. The other races to assign the World Cup 2011 are scheduled all over the world (see the calendar enlisted below) and the last one will take place in Lecco with the Grigne Sky Marathon on September 18.
Certainly Canazei and Val di Fassa give hospitality to one of the most suggestive of these races and are the perfect location for the 14^ edition of this incredibile sporting event, entitled to the memory of Diego Perathoner, its creator, founder and memorable president who accidentally perished in an Alpine rescue operation, almost two years ago.
Therefore the staff of the Organizing Committee, all volunteers guided by Diego Salvador, is already working to keep the high standard quality of the previous editions, recognized by athletes and praised by other organizers. The work is hard and it is aimed at making the next edition as successful as the previous ones, by bringing the most famous and strong internationl skyrunners to compete in Val di Fassa.
The main news, with respect to the previous edition, is that the staff intends to concentrate all the efforts on one main event only. Therefore the Vertical Kilometer will be disputed in August (Sunday 21) instead of on the Friday before the Dolomites Skyrace, as for the last two years.
The programme and the track of the Dolomites Skyrace, always demanding but extremely fascinating, will be the traditional one, starting and arriving in the Canazei main square. Athletes will run along the mountain trails and paths that lead to Passo Pordoi first, along the rocky tracks that climb up to the Forcella Pordoi and up straight to the Piz Boè at 3.152 m. Then the descent beigins towards the Boè Refuge, all the way down along the Val Lasties and very steep back to Canazei.
In the last year edition, on a track shortened because of real bad weather conditions (the track length was 16,3 km instead of the traditional 22 ones) Paolo Larger and the French Champion Laetitia Roux triumphed (Laetitia Roux also won the Vertical Kilometer World Championship, bringing home two incredibile successes).
This year the Dolomites Skyrace will be run on the traditional distance of 22 km and the records to beat will be those of Mitja Kosovelj (2h 04’53’’) and of Antonella Confortola (2h 30’ 09’’).
The Dolomites Skyrace is waiting for you. Come to run one of the most beatiful skyrace in the world.
